Potato Derby...

Tonight is our annual Potato Derby. We have a potato bar for dinner and then anyone who wants to participate carves their potato adds other veggies for ornamentation and we put wheels on it and down the derby track it goes.

Bandfest 2009

Last night was our schools Bandfest for raising funds for the arts, band, orchestra, theater and music programs. They had 3 groups perform last night and Jeff was the first performance. He did a great job.

Here is the article from the Greeley Tribune. In a lot of ways, Bandfest: 2009 is a family affair, with lots of talented kids and their talented moms and dads armed with their instruments of choice and a tune in their ear.

But Kris Pierce, who first organized the annual fundraiser a little more than two years ago to support art and music programs at Chappelow Arts Literacy Magnet School, thinks Bandfest is a lot more — with broad appeal to all music lovers.

This is no run-of-the-mill school music recital, after all.

In years past, Shawn Waggoner and the Tumblyweeds and Bob Purcell and The Outriders were among the headliners. Both Waggoner and Purcell have close ties to the school; three of Waggoner’s four children attended the school when she performed last year, and Purcell’s daughter attended the school.

This year’s lineup is just as well-connected. And just as amazingly accomplished on the stage.

Scott Van Loo’s kids, Elias and Ari, sing in Chappelow’s music program — Ari had the lead in a school play and Elias is in the school’s honor choir. Scott, meanwhile, is drummer and manager of Kizumba, an 11-piece salsa band based in Denver that has won WestWord’s “Best Latin Band in Denver” award and performed for audiences around the world.

Then there’s Jeff Jewkes. His son, Zach, is a Chappelow fourth-grader who is active in the school choir. Dad is an award-winning singer, instrumentalist and songwriter whose 2008 EP, “Standard Candles,” is available on iTunes. Jewkes, who has been back in the studio laying down more of his alternative/indie tracks for release this year, helped revamp Chappelow’s sound system.

Dave Wertz, meanwhile, plays trumpet for one of northern Colorado’s premiere big band/swing groups, Kreme of the Krop. Three of his children, Jacob, Nicole and Amber, attend Chappelow, and a fourth, Cassandra, was active in Chappelow’s music program before moving on to Greeley Central High School.

All three acts will entertain at Bandfest: 2009.

“It’s wonderful,” said Pierce, the music director at Chappelow. “One of the perks at the magnet school is having one of the most talented groups of parents out there.

Pierce herself is a familiar face outside of Chappelow, where she has taught for 18 years. She is a director for the Greeley Children’s Chorale and made her debut as Kreme of the Krop’s lead singer.

Pierce started Bandfest in 2007 to try to counter diminishing public funding for Chappelow’s art and music programs.

“Being involved like I am in the music community, I knew we had these bands,” she said. “I just kind of thought of the idea, and with the situation in the district and state and nation, felt like I needed to do something for the arts.”

So she sent notes out to parents and combed through her connections in the local music community. And people responded. The first two bandfests brought in $4,000 and $5,000 in 2007 and 2008, which helped provide instruments to youngsters unable to purchase their own, paid fees for the school’s use of copyrighted music, and gave the school “funding and flexibility for the arts program,” Pierce said.

She’s counting on a big turnout for tonight’s concert. Attendance for the first two Bandfests held in Chappelow’s gymnasium was about 350-400. This year, the concert switches venues to Greeley Central High School. It’s a bigger stage for an event that deserves bigger attention, Pierce said.

“This is a community-building event,” she said. “We’re trying to get it out to community, trying to get it some Central attendance.”
THE LINEUP
Kreme of the Crop (big band/swing); Kizumba (salsa); Jeff Jewkes (alternative); The Sticky Notes (Chappelow jazz band); the ’N Tunes (Chappelow choir) and Chappelow’s advanced orchestra.

Easter Weekend

We started Saturday off at the city Easter egg hunt where Jeff took pictures of the kids with the Easter bunny. There were a lot of cute kids there. Some that didn't want to get too close to the Bunny and others that snuggled in for a cute shot. Then it was drizzling a bit. It was nice to stay under the tent and when Jeff stepped back to take the shot the rain would fall off the tent top one time the rain fell right on his face and the other time down his back. It was a good thing that I keep some light mittens in my purse as he was able to use them and keep his fingers warm enough to hold the camera and take the pictures. Then at 11:30 we were able to head home and get the dog and the acini salad. I thought acini would be good as grandma would be able to eat this easily. Well this weekend we went to see Grandma Jewkes. It was good to see her. We had a nice dinner at Sue & Hal's and taught them how to play a new domino game called Chicken Foot. With 4 people you start with 12 tile and who ever has the highest double goes first. Starting with 12 and each game going to the next one down. Sometimes you may not always have the next highest double and so you skip it and go to the next one. Then with the double in the middle of the table everyone has to play that tile. For example with twelve being the double there would have to be 6 tile around it that have 12 on one side and a lower number on the other. If you can't play you get to draw. Once all 6 tile are around the double then you can play off any of the tile. Until the next double is played then you have to play off that double until 3 tile are around it. Once again if you can not play on the double then you have to draw. When you get down to 1 tile you tape it twice on the table and when the last tile is laid down then you when that round. You continue until you get to double blanks or three wins. Or you can count the points on the remaining tile. What ever suits your fancy. Also I got to hear from my mom on Easter which was a nice surprise. While they are on their mission we will only hear from them when they have cell service as they are not in a cellular area. Got to love email and chat.

Such A Boy...

Zac is so much fun. Here are a few pictures of him being a kid.  Clothes pins in his hair.  He did this all himself.
Here he is looking great for church.  He does clean up well. :o)
Playing with his dog out in the snow.  There wasn't quite enough to do much with but he had fun.
Here he is pretending to be a dog like Gingersnap.

Who Knew?

Here is a new performance video from Jeff. Enjoy!

Emergency Room

Well Wednesday night we found ourselves in the Emergency Room.  I had just cleaned up the kitchen and put away everything.  Then Jeff came home from his meeting at the church and went to make himself some herbal tea and upon opening the cupboard the bread knife fell from the top shelf and deeply cut his hand open between the fourth finger and the pinky.
